The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding

The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding: How to Build a Product or Service Into a World-Class Brand Hardcover – October, 1998

.com Review

As it becomes increIDgly associated with impressive corporate gains realized in recent years by companies ranging from FedEx and Rolex to Starbucks and Volvo, “branding” has developed into one of the marketing world’s hottest concepts. And for good reason, contend well-known strategist Al Ries and his daughter Laura Ries in The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding: How to Build a Product or Service into a World-Class Brand.

“Marketing is building a brand in the mind of the prospect,” they write. “If you can build a powerful brand you will have a powerful marketing program. If you can’t, then all the advertising, fancy packaging, sales promotion and public relations in the world won’t help you achieve your objective.” A no-holds-barred look at a diverse collection of successful–and not-so-successful–branding efforts undertaken by these and other high-profile firms, their book distills the most critical principles involved into a series of clear rules with straightforward titles such as The Law of Expansion, The Law of Contraction, The Law of Consistency, and The Law of Mortality. While some of their suggestions may at first seem counterintuitive, together they compose a logical blueprint for success in today’s ever-more-competitive environment. –Howard Rothman

Review

“Al Ries demonstrates that marketers need two skills: building a brand and keeping it alive. Through stellar company profiles and keen insights, this book will show them how, whether they’re entrepreneurs or seasoned veterans.” — Philip Kotler, Professor of International Marketing, J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University

“Al Ries’s laws of marketing turned my software company into a worldwide brand and the dominant player in a whole new software category. Anyone looking to market their company successfully has to read The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding.” — Patrick M. Sullivan, CEO, SalesLogix

“I could only wish that I’d had access to this book at the start of my career, the insights it provides are indispensable to anyone seeking to build their business into a recognized brand.” — Philip J. Romano, CEO, Romano Enterprises

“This book is like a synthesizer. Using an impressive list of the world’s best-known brands, it fine tunes the art of branding to its optimum levels, enabling you to make the right marketing decisions with utmost confidence.” — Scott Kay, CEO, Scott Kay Inc.

The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding was primarily written by Laura Ries – Al Ries was a co-author on the book – in case anyone didn’t know. Such information is available at their website. I rank this book a solid 5 star book because the insights / examples provided far outweigh any concerns / problems I found with the book. This book caused me to look at advertising / marketing from a different perspective in my daily life which is what I use to evaluate if something is a 5 star book
I loved The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding for the following reasons:
1. It flat out states the importance of marketing & branding, which is important to separate in the readers’ mind before beginning. As they state "Marketing is building a brand in the mind of the prospect. If you can build a powerful brand you will have a powerful marketing program. If you can’t, then all the advertising, fancy packaging, sales promotion and public relations in the world won’t help you achieve your objective."
2. The Ries’ call it like they see it. Excellent examples of marketing / advertising stupidity / effectiveness are provided.
3. They talk about the plethora of products that are produced each year.
4. They discuss how businesses must get inside a consumer’s mind (AKA positioning) to win the war. Volvo = safety, BMW = Ultimate Driving Machine, Mercedes = prestige, Toyota = Reliability, Ford = ?, Chevy = ?. The Ries’ clearly spell out an excellent reason as to why the U.S. automanufacturers are getting killed.
5. The book illustrates, as did the 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, how companies dilute their brands through line extensions (I personally believe this due to my personal experience / buying patterns and observations of others.)
6.

Review

“Featuring 19 chapters written by 40 contributors, including 10 men, the textbook-style work is heavy on the academic research, with articles ranging from illnesses and mortality rates of women in Iraq and Afghanistan and post-traumatic stress to medical concerns, reproductive health, homecomings, motherhood in wartime and more.” –Military Times

Featured in the National Museum of Health and Medicine Newsletter.

“In Women at War, Army veterans Elspeth Cameron Ritchie and Anne L. Naclerio have produced the first book detailing what war does to the physical and mental health of the growing number of women waging it. … The 40 contributors (including 10 men) write about women’s health on the front lines and the challenges of being a soldier and a mother.” –TIME

“The book is directed at clinicians who care for women who are or who have been in the military. Most chapters are relatively short, 10-20 pages, and very readable. Although we do not know a lot about women at war, what we do know is in this book.” –Community Psychiatrist

Best reading I have ever done on our women service members. Such important information. A must read for anyone who deals with veterans.

This book is a great and needed addition to literature on women in the military. Comprehensive look at the many issues facing our women service members! Excellent text!

I just met one of the authors and I can’t tell you how excited I am to read it as a woman who has served and who takes care of women in uniform! Thank you Drs Ritchie and Naclario for your work and committment to health of the force.

This book is a good resource if you want to understand the history and processes and politics behind U.S. health care policy. Its useful when you have to write papers about processes rather than about the policies themselves since some of these do change from time to time. It is useful in that it presents much of the information in one place so you don’t have to go searching all over the place for it. But, if you don’t mind spending the time you can research and obtain this same information for free online.

This has up-to-date information and is easy to navigate. It met my needs during the course. I was able to use it for reference throughout the course.

I need this book for a graduate class and the information is very through; great wealth of information and easy to understand.

Meat Eater does something simple, but amazing: it presents hunting, fishing, and trapping for what they really are: a primal connection to wild creatures through using their bodies to fulfill our most basic needs.

Steven Rinella skipped the contorted, snobbish, and apologetic philosophical hogwash that has characterized generations of hunting literature. He skipped the self-indulgent glamor of hunting trophy kill tales. This is not hunting pornography; it’s real stories about a real hunter pursuing animals for all the reasons that people actually do that.

The book is composed of stories that illustrate these various motivations to hunt. As a child, it was because his dad and brothers did. In college, because he needed food. He went crazy for steelhead and bonefish fishing because it was so damn exciting. He hunted for adventure in the Missouri Breaks, and Dall sheep for the challenge. And always, it was for every one of those reasons–and to satisfy a deep, primal, desire that needs to explanation or apology. And yeah, to get meat.

There’s another thing about these stories–they’re awesome. Really well-written, and full of subtle insight. I read the whole thing within 20 hours of getting the book in my hand. As an avid hunter who spends many winter nights reading about it, I felt, "finally, someone who thinks about hunting like I do."

Rinella doesn’t shy away from the moral and ethical questions that surround hunting, fishing, and trapping (hereafter I’ll refer to them all as "hunting, because they are). He explores them not in an abstract sense, but from the more credible point of view of his own personal experiences.

The Poky Little Puppy (A Little Golden Book) Paperback – 1970
Author: Visit ‘s Janette Sebring Lowrey Page ID: B000P38J4Q

One of the original 12 Little Golden Books, The Poky Little Puppy has sold nearly 15 million copies since 1942, making it one of the most popular children?s books of all time. Now this curious little puppy is ready to win the hearts and minds of a new generation of kids.

Paperback: 23 pagesPublisher: Western Publishing (1970)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0307021343ISBN-13: 978-0307021342ID: B000P38J4Q Product Dimensions: 8 x 6 x 0.1 inches Shipping Weight: 1.6 pounds Best Sellers Rank: #1,825,021 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

…but the Poky Little Puppy is beloved by children of every generation. Early this summer I saw "Poky Little Puppy" t-shirts for adults being sold at a popular national retail chain near NYU. A few weeks later I still couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I went back to buy one. They were all sold out. The store manager (who also was in his 30s) told me that all of their stores were sold out, both retail and online. People kept coming in asking if there was a wait list. I asked him if they were all college students, but he surprised me by saying that there were a fair number of adults. We started talking about our favorite books as children, and both had a good laugh over the fact that we’d loved the Poky Little Puppy as much as any of the classics by Sendak or Silverstein, but that as adults, we’d become blind adherents to the ratings, erroneously assuming that the Poky Little Puppy wasn’t "real" children’s literature because it won no awards or praise from the critics. As I was walking out, I turned and asked him if he remembered the book’s refrain whenever the puppies rolled down the hill. He grinned and, in unison, we both said: "And down they went to see, roly-poly, pell-mell, tumble-bumble, till they came to the green grass; and there they stopped short." Needless to say, this book now has a place on the bookshelf of every child in my family–and they all love it just as much as I did.

This is the sweetest little book. I read it when I was a little girl, and now I am going to buy it for my soon-to-be-born baby. I have always thought of the poky little puppy as a hero for the ones who stop to smell the roses.

Since there is always a child at my home, I was running out of books for them and decided I needed to add a few. I am a big fan of books written years ago and decided to purchase this book. I am so glad I did. It is the sweetest story, and I am always asked to read the book over and over again.

I find that books written a long time ago have wonderful lessons and appeal to children a great deal more then many contemporary children’s books.

It is a lovely book and I encourage anyone with children to purchase it.
